How Long Do Implant Retained Dentures Last
Patients with traditional dentures often complain of discomfort, difficulty eating, and a lack of confidence in social situations when wearing them. Fortunately, implant retained dentures, also called clip on dentures, are a simple solution to these problems.
Implant retained dentures function much like traditional dentures but unlike traditional dentures that are removed for cleaning, implant dentures should only be removed by a dentist. Whereas traditional dentures rest on top of the patient’s gums, implant dentures clip or snap onto metal posts that are surgically implanted into the gumline. Through a natural healing process known as osseointegration, new bone is produced around the implant that permanently fuses the appliance in place creating a solid foundation for the denture.
Patients that are considering implant retained dentures may be curious about how long the dentures last. Like most prostheses, the lifespan of implant supported dentures will vary depending on the user. In general, patients can expect their dentures to last between 10 to 20 years but there are ways to ensure maximum longevity of the device.
Maintenance
As previously mentioned, implant supported dentures should only be removed by a dentist. Because the dentures are not removed at night or for cleaning, food particles can become trapped and go unnoticed. As such, maintenance is vital because if not properly removed, the food particles can form harmful bacteria around the dentures that will negatively impact their longevity.
Daily Cleaning Routine
Just as normal teeth should, implant retained dentures should be brushed at least twice daily. When brushing, implant patients should pay particular attention to the gumline and areas surrounding their implants. Proper cleaning is imperative as even a slight buildup of bacteria can irritate the gums, lead to disease, and is detrimental to not only overall oral health, but the longevity of the dentures as well.
Regular Dentist Visits
Because the implant dentures should not be removed by anyone but a dentist, regular visits with the dentist will be needed to remove the dentures, clean the area, and quickly diagnose any possible issues. The dentist will be able to address areas that are not visible or otherwise accessible when the dentures are in place. Routine dentist visits will help ensure the implants and dentures last as long as possible.
Overall Health
In order to stay in ideal condition, implant supported dentures rely on the jawbone’s strength. Should the jawbone become too weak to support implants, removing the implants may be required. Maintaining sound overall health can be critical in extending the dentures lifespan.
Type of Food Consumed
Consuming foods rich in vitamins and nutrients is also vital in ensuring the bones supporting the implant dentures remain strong. Vitamin D is particularly important as it contributes to bone strength. Hard, acidic, sugary, or sticky foods should be minimized as these foods are not only unhealthy but can cause premature wear on the dentures.
Bone Stimulation
Bones, including the jawbone, need regular use or they risk shrinking and losing density. Chewing crunchy vegetables and fruits can not only stimulate the jawbone but provide crucial nutrients needed for the body to stay healthy.
