Implant Retained Dentures vs. Implant Supported Dentures

Using dental implants to support or retain uncomfortable, ill-fitting dentures is an increasingly popular option for edentulous patients. The benefits of implant supported dentures differ from implant retained dentures but both options can improve denture stability and bite functionality. Determining which treatment option is best for the patient is based on several factors which will be discussed in this article.

Implant Supported Dentures: Overview

Implant supported dentures provide the patients with the most natural and effective bite. By absorbing the biteforce through the implants and into the jawbone, these dentures allow patients to eat the foods they normally would. Because this treatment option requires a greater number of implants, cost of the procedure tends to be higher. Adequate bone structure and quality is also required which could necessitate additional procedures, such as a bone graft or tissue regeneration, to ensure successful results. In these cases, opting for implant retained dentures could be a preferable alternative.

Implant Retained Dentures: Overview

More of the force from biting will be absorbed by the gums with implant retained dentures. This option is generally more cost-effective, since fewer dental implants are needed, and unlike with implant supported dentures, the use of mini dental implants is often possible. The implants can often be placed to maximize available areas of naturally thick and strong bone which diminishes or eliminates the need for bone grafting procedures. These dentures can help restore the patient’s ability to confidently, and comfortably, eat and talk but they do not completely replicate the natural bite and must be removed nightly for cleaning.

Which Option is Right for Me?

Determining which treatment option is best for the patient’s situation will be based on several factors including:

  • Health: Patients suffering from sleep apnea or temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) typically find wearing their teeth at night to be more comfortable. They may prefer the support provided by strong, properly fitting teeth. As such, implant supported dentures may be the better option particularly when stronger materials are used to fabricate the dentures.
  • Lifestyle: Having removable teeth can be an unpleasant reminder of tooth loss. For patients that hate the idea of having removable teeth, having dentures that are permanently set in place and only removable by a dentist, may be preferable. The psychological benefits may make implant supported dentures ideal for these patients.
  • Diet: Implant retained dentures may be suitable for patients that do not mind abstaining from hard to chew foods. Often these patients have already spent years on diets of softer, easier to eat foods and may have grown accustomed to this practice. However, if the patient enjoys tougher foods, such as steak, that require more chewing and bite force, implant supported dentures will be a better option.
  • Cost: Cost is often an important factor when choosing between the implant denture options. Implant retained dentures tend to be less costly but the perceived benefits of implant supported dentures may justify the additional expense. Insurance coverage is also a consideration as many dental plans may not cover the costs of the dentures if considered cosmetic rather than medical necessity.
