One Day Dental Implants

A dental implant is the new gold standard when needing to replace a natural tooth. When successful the artificial tooth not only looks natural, but it also fundamentally acts naturally as well delivering pressure sensations and even temperature changes. Let’s run through the procedure of placing a dental implant and then look at the comparisons between a traditional dental implant and that of a same day, one day dental implant.

The Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implant was introduced in and around the 1960s. Prior to this the only option you had to replace a tooth was that of a dental bridge, which relies on the neighboring teeth to support the artificial crown. With the dental implant the procedure begins with a local anesthetic numbing the soft tissue that will be involved. Then a small incision gives the dentist access to the jawbone immediately adjacent to the missing tooth. A tiny hole will be drilled into the jawbone in which a titanium post is placed into that hole. The surgical site will be sutured closed and the post will be given adequate time to fuse to the bone. No temporary crown is placed during this period of time, leaving you the three to six-month healing time without a tooth in that gap. For some patients this becomes a problem depending on the location of the gap. Once it has been determined that the post has fused to the bone delivering stability the soft tissue is opened again, an extension or abutment is placed on the post to reach the surface and now a permanent crown is affixed to this abutment.

The Comparisons between a Traditional and a One Day Dental Implant

Of course, the primary difference is the entire procedure is done in one day, or one visit. The abutment and the crown are placed at the same time. What is to be gained is that you leave the office without a gap in your teeth and your smile. The risks you take is that the titanium post has not had a chance to fuse to the bone. Since the crown will now continue to act as a permanent tooth by both biting and chewing it will disrupt the fusing process, the actual bone integration that can lead to the implant loosening. The success rate is considerably higher with the traditional dental implant.

The Benefits of a Dental Implant

A successful dental implant delivers a number of benefits. First and foremost, it ensures a healthy smile. Your smile is a very undervalued asset that is foundational to your personality. It helps develop your self-esteem and your self-confidence. This is important in your personal interactions, your social circles and your professional encounters. A smile with a gap for three to six months may not be acceptable to some patients due to their personalities. The dental implant, because of the titanium post, also delivers the pressures to the jawbone of biting and chewing, just like a natural tooth. The post will also feel the difference between hot and cold. Schedule a consultation and determine which dental implant will work best for you.
